Symptoms of a Worn Serpentine Belt

A worn accessory-drive belt may cause:

  • Squealing or chirping noises
  • Visible cracking or rib damage
  • Glazed or hardened belt surfaces
  • Frayed belt edges
  • Belt slippage
  • Intermittent charging-system performance
  • Reduced power-steering or air-conditioning performance
  • Belt dust around the pulleys

Noise may also be caused by a worn tensioner, damaged idler pulley, misaligned accessory, contaminated pulley, or failing bearing.

Installation Note

Before installation, compare the new belt with the original belt and confirm the rib count, effective length, routing, and accessory-drive configuration.

Inspect the automatic tensioner, idler pulleys, accessory pulleys, bearings, and alignment while the belt is removed. Replace worn or damaged components separately.

Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s belt-routing diagram and installation procedure. Confirm that all belt ribs are fully seated within the pulley grooves before starting the engine.
